Wheel Building

I wanna learn how to build up a wheel this summer.  Wonder how many I'll trash in the process?

I took the class produced by Park Tools from a local shop and did well with it.
It follows Brandt's book as the text book.

How'd you make out with Brandt's book? I thought it was overkill, and of little help in practical wheelbuilding.

I haven't had a chance to open the book yet!   ;D   Knowing me, I may never open it.

I'd read the book pretty much through, took the class for one-on-one guidance through a few wheels, and now refer back to the book just to get the spokes laced correctly.
Knowing myself, it'll take a lot of wheels before I get the lacing right without the aide.

Jim, me too! I did read everything about the pros and cons of different lacing patterns, but skimmed the highly technical sections. Effects of tension and lacing patterns are all that's important! I've boiled it down to straight, 3-cross and 4-cross as the only necessary patterns, set to 80-100% recommended tension! That's IT!

It's like they say, it's not how much you have memorized, but whether or not you know where to look it up for reference! Whew! That's very good for me, because to learn something new and commit to memory means I have to shove some other little tid-bit of info out of my head to make room!
